Tools like n8n, Temporal, and purpose-built security orchestration platforms allow AI agents to be wired into your existing SIEM, ticketing system, and communication channels without bespoke development. The plumbing is handled; your team focuses on the logic.
A well-designed AI-driven SOC operates in layers:
Ingestion and normalisation — Raw logs, endpoint telemetry, network flow data, and cloud audit trails are ingested and normalised by the SIEM. This part has not changed; AI does not replace robust data pipelines.
Behavioural baseline and anomaly detection — AI models establish statistical baselines for user and entity behaviour. Deviations — a service account suddenly querying AD at 2 AM, a workstation beaconing to an unusual external IP — surface immediately rather than being buried in threshold-based rules.
Alert triage by AI agent — Instead of a queue of hundreds of raw SIEM alerts waiting for a human analyst, an AI triage agent processes each alert against the context of: the affected asset’s criticality, recent similar events, known threat actor TTPs, and your organisation’s risk posture. The output is a prioritised, annotated queue — not a fire hose.
Automated containment for defined playbooks — For confirmed low-complexity incidents (credential spray on a non-privileged account, known malware on an isolated endpoint), automated playbooks execute containment actions without human intervention. Isolation, password reset, ticket creation, stakeholder notification — handled in seconds.
Human analyst escalation — Complex, novel, or high-impact incidents are escalated to human analysts with full AI-generated context: timeline of events, affected systems, recommended response steps, and relevant threat intelligence. The analyst makes decisions; the AI reduces the cognitive load.
